41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
42 They all ate and were satisfied,
43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Walking in Faith: Reflections on Mark 6:41-44
Mark 6:41 captures a seemingly mundane yet pivotal moment in this story: Jesus gives thanks to the Father, even for just a measly 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Jesus’ simple yet profound action of giving thanks before distributing the meager amount of food speaks volumes about His trust in the Father’s abundant provision, which in the end, paid off. God provided the miraculous power to feed the 5000. This example challenges us to adopt a similar posture of gratitude in all circumstances, realizing that even in the face of adversity, famine, or hardship, our gratitude can change things. This is something we need to practice not just once, not just every so often, but something we need to learn how to live out everyday. Once we change our mindset and set our focus on God over our circumstances, we are reminded that what seems impossible is actually possible with our Almighty, powerful God.
Daily Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Help us learn how to rely on You more and more. No matter our situation, no matter our circumstance, help us to get into the habit of giving thanks to You in the midst of it all. Following after Jesus’ example, help us to train ourselves to turn to You first instead of worrying, trusting and knowing that you will work all things for the good.
We humbly pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
