29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
Walking in Faith: Reflections on Matthew 20:29-34
These verses highlight several key points about a life of faith in Jesus. First, it shows Jesus’ abundance of mercy and compassion, being moved by the blind men’s plight and thus healing them. Although the crowd may have thought differently, this story shows how Jesus is willing to heal and restore all people, no matter who they are or what their situation is.
Secondly, this passage shows the importance of faith and what it looks like. Once the blind men were healed, they immediately followed Jesus. Figuratively speaking, we were those who were blind but now see through God’s grace and love. After receiving “sight”, we too must respond to this love by following God and Jesus, truly living according to their teachings.
